Operations

Dispatching into the Alberta pool every day since 2023.

Everything below is in production. The same platform runs all of it.

The first plant went live in 2023. Most of the capacity under management belongs to independent customers rather than affiliated assets, on three to five year contracts. Specific assets are not named here out of respect for customer confidentiality.

What an operating day looks like

No one logs in to make it happen.

  1. 01

    Forecast

Pool price forecasts for the coming hours are regenerated against live system conditions and snapshotted with their inputs, so any decision can be reconstructed later.

  2. 02

    Optimise

Forecast revenue is weighed against the cost to run and the unit’s minimum run and off times. The decision is re-optimised up to every 60 seconds.

  3. 03

    Submit

Offers and any required restatements go to the AESO inside the deadline, automatically, with the forecast and system state that produced them logged alongside.

  4. 04

    Act and verify

The plant starts or stops remotely. The startup is held, then checked against metered output. A mismatch is rechecked and escalated to an on-call operator.

  5. 05

    Reconcile

Generation, pool revenue, margin payments, cost of gas and gross margin are reconciled into daily, weekly and monthly reports.

Technology readiness

Commercial, not research.

The addressable fleet

Every generation type in Alberta.

Gas is where WiSDM started and where it is most proven, but the dispatch problem is the same shape for wind, solar and storage. Each of them has to offer into the same pool, under the same rules, against the same hourly price.

Alberta generating plants by type: 97 gas-fired, 50 wind, 49 solar, 15 biomass and other, 11 storage, 9 hydro.Gas-fired97Wind50Solar49Biomass & other15Storage11Hydro9
231 generating plants, 23,415 MW. WiSDM dispatches every one of these types.

Would it work on your asset?

The constraints that matter are capacity, fuel arrangement, what your control system exposes, and how the unit is dispatched today.
